Population

Cyprus is inhabited by a vast number of people belonging to different nationalities and embracing various cultures. However, the two most populous ethnic groups are Greeks and Turks. There was a unique division of the island not long ago, resulting in most Greeks moving to the south of Cyprus, while Turks remained in the north. Currently, the island is home to over 900,000 people, of which 650,000 are Greeks, and 160,000 are Turks. Additionally, unofficial data indicate that more than 17,000 British, about 30,000 Russians, and only 4,000 Armenians permanently reside in Cyprus.

Demographic Situation

Cyprus is considered a favorable place to live. In recent years, the birth rate has exceeded the death rate. According to data published in 2011, based on the latest census, just over 790,000 people live in the so-called free territory of the island, comprising about 400,000 families. In the partially recognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, more than 290,000 people reside, which is 11% more than in 2006. The island is multinational, with Greeks making up 76% of the population, Greek Cypriots 17%, national minorities 4%, and foreign citizens just 3%. In recent years, a so-called Russian colony has been actively developing in Cyprus, with many Russians moving to this stunning resort island.

All About the Locals

Cypriots are generally kind and friendly people. They don't particularly like to argue or resort to violent actions. The exception to this rule was the war of 1974 when the island was divided between Greeks and Turks. Since then, the south has become the territory of the so-called "indigenous population" of Cyprus, while the north remained under Muslim possession. Since that time, the neighbors have lived in peace and harmony, competing only for tourists in the most humane and creative ways. Tourists are adored in Cyprus, forgiven for much, but only within the confines of recreational complexes. Wandering in a swimsuit through main administrative buildings is, of course, not advisable. So, you can confidently head to this beautiful island for a fresh tan and pleasant experiences. The locals will help make your stay unforgettable and magical, especially if you promise them a modest financial gratitude.
